Milan is a city where history and fashion converge. Well-heeled residents pound centuries-old pavements, striding past landmarks and the boutiques of storied Houses, each with histories of their own. Portrait Milano provides a meeting point – culture, history and fashion come together at a 16th-century seminary in the heart of Milan’s fashion district, mere moments from the Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

The five-star property occupies the former Archiepiscopal Seminary of Milan. In the centuries since its inception, the building lived many lives – as a college, prison, government office and military hospital – before being transformed into Portrait Milano by Lungarno Collection, a hospitality group led by the Ferragamo family.
Though the opening marks a new chapter, it incorporates the building’s history rather than erasing it. Interior designer and long-time Ferragamo collaborator Michele Bönan transformed the granite behemoth while honouring its origins, juxtaposing colonnades, baroque archways and magnificent sculptures with contemporary charm.

At the heart of Portrait Milano is the piazza. The largest public square in Milan’s fashion district, it offers respite from the bustle and beckons Milan Fashion Week attendees for an espresso (or something slightly stronger) between shows. Beefbar, housed in a converted chapel, serves premium cuts and international cuisine under ancient vaults. Seating spills onto the square and provides a prime spot for people-watching if you are able to nab a seat. Restaurant 10_11 – the property’s all-day dining restaurant with a renowned breakfast – and American-inspired bar, Rumore, complete the dining offerings.

Upstairs, sun streams through floor-to-ceiling windows that line pathways to the property’s 73 rooms and suites. Accommodation is inspired by Milanese residences – intimate, cosy and a masterclass in restraint, they evoke a home away from home with Italian walnut wood, Carrara marble, considered artworks and the property’s signature red across textiles. The Studio Deluxe Premium is a rarity in a compact city and comes equipped with a private patio; a pocket of peace that invites guests to soak up the September sunshine and (finally) sink into that book. For those turning fashion week into a well-deserved family vacation, the magnificent three-bedroom Borromeo Suite overlooks the seminary’s private garden and provides plenty of space to sprawl.
The Longevity Spa by The Longevity Suite is the first of its kind, taking inspiration from the world’s Blue Zones for its holistic treatments. Biohacking meets ancient traditions beneath vaulted ceilings and granite columns, providing the antidote for jet lag and front-row fatigue.

With a location steeped in Milanese history, Portrait Milano is a cultural space that connects to its surroundings rather than simply existing amongst them. It bridges fashion and history – respecting both in equal measure – and offers a considered base for exploring the city’s sights, whether you are part of the style set or a luxury-seeking history buff.
