Elizabeth Arden: Iconic Beauty Legacy and the Must-Have Eight-Hour Cream

Dec 09, 2024 | 7 min read

Elizabeth Arden famously believed that beauty is the birthright of every woman. With this vision, she revolutionised skincare by blending science and nature, creating iconic treatments that continue to empower women.

What is Elizabeth Arden?

Everyone and their grandmother (particularly Catherine Zeta Jones’ grandmother) has heard of the brand’s rejuvenating properties. Elizabeth Arden has become famous for many stellar perfume and skincare products such as the Eight Hour CreamPREVAGE Anti-Ageing SerumRed Door Perfume and Advanced Ceramide Capsules

With over 110 years at the helm of the beauty industry, the brand has made many notable contributions: supplying a defiant shade of “Montezuma Red” in support of the suffragette movement, becoming the first company to introduce eye-makeup to American women and the first to conceptualise travel-size products.

The Elizabeth Arden brand was created to empower and validate women. It pioneered modern-day practices such as scientific approaches to cosmetic formulation and has since become a household name.

How did Elizabeth Arden start her business?

Arden (born Florence Nightingale Graham December 31, 1884 - October 18, 1966), made her foray into the beauty industry in 1910. After establishing a business with Elizabeth Hubbard, they opened the doors of their first Red Door Salon on Fifth Avenue. Though the partnership dissolved in 1914, she opened her own and rebranded as Elizabeth Arden. The brand was founded on innovation and female empowerment through beauty.

Make-up and beauty products were heavily frowned upon. Arden sought to change this as she believed that it could be wielded as a tool to enhance women’s natural features; not hide it. The entrepreneur was instrumental in modifying the lens through which beauty was looked at. Such was her influence on the general public and faith in her uncompromising vision that she succeeded in opening salons in New York, Washington D.C., London and Paris.

With a fresh and floral bouquet, the parfum was made with the modern woman in mind. Key notes in this fragrance are dewy magnolia, violet and amber.

It offers a complex and abundant melange of rich and rare floral scents.  The top notes of lily of the valley, freesia and wild violets draw you in with their floral aromas. The beating heart of Red Door is a concoction of  Red Rose, Jasmine, African Orange Flower, and Ylang-Ylang. Finally, the base notes of Honey, Oak Moss, and Sandalwood linger with the promise of more.

The Eight-Hour Cream

Dubbed fit for royalty, Elizabeth Arden’s eight-hour cream has earned its cult status over the decades. While reaching the grand age of 96 may not be entirely due to the cream, it certainly maintained the Queen’s beaming complexion. Created in 1930, this product has reached mystical levels of popularity again and again. The Skin Protectant has been hailed as a multi-purpose balm to moisturise, soothe and protect as well as cosmetically. The range has now expanded to include Lip Repair BalmAll-Over Body Oil, and Nighttime Miracle Moisturiser among others.

Ceramide Capsules

Though the ceramide capsules may be a singular dose of youth-restoring serum, they pack quite the punch. These wonder capsules have been hailed as age-defying, enhancing the skin’s barrier repair function and making tired skin supple and smoother. The secret behind this miracle formula? The ceramide technology helps restore depleted ceramides (lipids) and bolsters the skin’s moisture layer.

Prevage Anti ageing Daily Serum
