"It has been the greatest honour of my life to carry on my brother Gianni's legacy."

After 28 years as creative director of Versace, Donatella Versace is officially stepping down. Dario Vitale, former design director at Miu Miu, will be filling the role. However, Donatella won't be straying too far. She will remain at the House as Chief Brand Ambassador and will focus on Versace's philanthropic and charitable endeavours, according to a statement.

Donatella took over as creative director following her brother Gianni's tragic murder in 1997. In a statement shared to Instagram, Donatella writes, "It has been the greatest honour of my life to carry on my brother Gianni's legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity."

The news sent shockwaves through the industry when it was announced on 13 March and is somewhat bittersweet. Donatella is a beloved figure that has created an undeniable mark on the fashion world. While she expressed her excitement at Dario's appointment - "I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes," she wrote - this new chapter marks the first time in the House's history that a non-family member will be at the helm.

43-year-old Italian designer Dario Vitale has had an impressive career spanning stints at Dsquared2, Bottega Veneta and Miu Miu. At the latter, he ascended the ranks from fashion designer to design director and has been credited with contributing to Miu Miu's transformation and, therefore, its commercial success.

Vitale officially begins on 1 April and will reportedly debut his first collection during the spring/summer 2026 season.
