The 98th Academy Awards took place on 15 March in Los Angeles, wrapping-up awards season and one of the tightest races the industry has seen in recent times. Sinners broke records with a whopping 16 nominations and walked away with four Oscars including Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan’s performance as twins Smoke and Stack. One Battle After Another, the action-packed film starring Leonardo Di Caprio, Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti, counts Best Picture and Best Director among its six awards, while Jessie Buckley scooped Best Actress for her portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet. Despite winning the award for Best Actor at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards earlier this season, Timothée Chalamet and Marty Supreme were snubbed at the Academy Awards, taking home no trophies for the critically acclaimed film despite its nine nominations.
There were some history-making moments at the 98th Academy Awards including Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s Best Cinematography win for Sinners – she made history as the first woman and first woman of colour to win the trophy. Elsewhere, K-Pop Demon Hunters‘ smash hit, Golden, is the first K-Pop song to win Best Original Song, while Michael B. Jordan is only the sixth Black actor to win Best Actor. Sentimental Value made a mark as the first Norwegian film to win Best International Feature Film and Weapons‘ Best Supporting Actress Amy Madigan set a record for the longest gap between nominations and a win, having last been nominated in 1986 for Twice in a Lifetime.
