Time is a concept that we like to cast as a villain — whether we’re racing against it or simply out of it, so often it’s a restrictive force that dictates our comings and goings far more than we’d want. But at Van Cleef & Arpels, time seems to work differently. It’s an infinitely flexible muse that stretches to accommodate the loftiest ideas, or shrinks to cradle the most intimate of concepts. And this year’s launches at Geneva’s Watches and Wonders fair tell its story in the most marvellous of ways — as an ode to the very cosmos.
With Poetry of the Heavens, the Maison’s theme for a constellation of exquisite timepieces, we find ourselves bound for the aether where we encounter spellbinding tales and endless beauty. Chief among these stories are the poignantly expressed Lady Rencontre Céleste and Lady Retrouvailles Célestes timepieces, which transform the passing of time into an unfolding love story.
At the heart of both creations lies the ancient tale of Vega and Altair, known in traditional Chinese lore as Niulang and Zhinü or the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. The folk tale tells of two star-crossed lovers, one mortal and one immortal, separated by the celestial river of the Milky Way due to their forbidden love. But once a year, on the seventh night of the seventh lunar month, a bridge of magpies allows them to reunite for a brief, bittersweet moment. Its theme of yearning, stretched across eternity, forms the basis of Qixi Festival — the Chinese equivalent of Valentine’s Day — and in the hands of Van Cleef & Arpels the story becomes something exquisitely tangible.
The Lady Rencontre Céleste captures the beginning of the tale, as the lovers appear in a suspended moment of meeting. Their white gold and diamond-encrusted silhouettes sparkle against a deep blue firmament, while their faces, suggested by rose-cut diamonds, incline toward one another in a gesture that feels both tender and infinite. Around them, a sky unfolds in layered blues: champlevé enamel creates depth and structure, while grisaille enamel introduces a painterly chiaroscuro. Above, a diamond-set moon emits a soft, diffused glow, illuminating clouds formed in the Maison’s groundbreaking plique-à-jour enamel, where stones appear to hover within. These clouds, translucent as stained glass, have their edges traced in diamonds that catch the light like distant stars.
While Rencontre is about togetherness, Retrouvailles Célestes expresses the ache of yearning. Here, the palette shifts to tender shades of pink and mauve, the sky warm with longing and hope. The lovers stand apart, arms outstretched, yet connected by a delicate bridge of sculpted white gold birds in a dynamic composition. It’s a tableau that feels alive, the roiling heavens shifting subtly with every movement of the wrist.
Both watches extend their narrative beyond the dial. Turn them over, and the story continues in the engraving of the Summer Triangle constellation, formed by Vega, Altair and Deneb, etched into a night sky. Such poetic gestures are underpinned by formidable technical expertise. Van Cleef & Arpels brings together a spectacular range of métiers d’art — champlevé, grisaille, plique-à-jour, miniature painting — with each requiring extraordinary precision and patience.
It’s this ever-present interplay between imagination and innovation that lies at the core of Van Cleef & Arpels’s art and philosophy. From earlier creations to these latest celestial visions, the Maison’s continued exploration of the recurring theme of astronomy is still yet to find its final frontier. And with Poetry of the Heavens, these watches go further than simply referencing the cosmos — they embody its rhythms, mysteries and quiet grandeur.
The heavens, after all, aren’t as hurried as us Earth-bound mortals. They move in their own time, guided by forces both visible and unseen.
