Scarves have typically been reserved for tying around one’s neck; oversized and woollen in the winter, small and silky come summertime. At its most adventurous, vintage patterned scarves are woven around the handle of an Hermès Kelly. Social media has found a new use for the scarf this season and it is taking the style set by storm. Say goodbye to your belts – scarves are now being worn around the waist to cinch oversized dresses, elevate jeans and a tee and add a dash of femininity to tailored co-ords.
This isn’t, however, a sarong. Nor is it a misplaced beach cover-up. This season’s scarf trend differentiates itself from the traditional Southeast-Asian wrap with a shorter length, silk material and low-rise tie that sits across the hips. The trend has been spotted both on and off the runway –Julian Klausner sent models down the Dries Van Noten runway at his debut menswear show wearing scarves over denim; Alexa Chung offset a structured blazer with a delicate silk iteration; and Jennifer Lawrence dressed-up an off-duty look with a patterned piece.
