And just like that, The Met Gala has come and gone, leaving us in a fashion frenzy that will no doubt linger for days (if not weeks) to come. Fashion’s most extravagant evening sees Hollywood’s biggest names descend onto the steps of The Metropolitan Museum of Art for The Met Gala to raise funds for The Costume Institute. The event coincides with the opening of an exhibition and this year, the exhibition is Costume Art, which explores the connection between fashion, the body and fine art. The dress code for the evening is chosen in-line with the exhibition; the dress code for the 2026 Met Gala was Fashion as Art, and called for attendees to celebrate fashion as an art form and the body as a canvas.
Some celebrities nailed the assignment, referencing actual artworks in their ensembles. For example, Emma Chamberlain’s custom Mugler gown was inspired by Erin Hanson’s Dreamy Impressionist; Yu-Chi Lyra Kuo embodied the Winged Victory of Samothrace in Jean Paul Gaultier; and Angela Bassett replicated The Girl in the Pink Dress by Prominent Harlem. More playful interpretations of fine art came courtesy of Sabrina Carpenter, who wore a Dior gown made of film strips from Sabrina, and Eileen Gu drenched in Iris Van Herpen bubbles. Then, there was Heidi Klum showcasing her affinity for fancy dress with a full-body makeover that turned her into a walking sculpture.
