Pioneering Cubism and modern collage while contributing to Surrealism, Pablo Picasso is a name in art history that signals a change in perspective. His distinct style and expression through various mediums, including sculpture, watercolour and ceramics, impacted the art styles of the 20th century, turning them toward experimentation. In collaboration with the Musée national Picasso-Paris and France Muséums, Louvre Abu Dhabi presents Picasso, the Figure, a series exploring the artist’s treatment of figuration from his earlier works to the bolder paintings seen toward the end of his career.
The exhibition brings together over 130 artworks from museums across the globe, from the Musée du Louvre in Paris to the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha. Picasso, the Figure offers art enthusiasts in the region an opportunity to experience the artist’s oeuvre all in one place. Alongside Picasso’s works, six Arab artists will be featured throughout the exhibition, highlighting the influence he has had on modern artists from the Arab world. These include Iraqi artists Dia al-Azzawi, Jewad Selim and Shakir Hassan Al Said, as well as the Algerian painter and ceramicist Baya Mahieddine.
Curated by Cécile Debray, President of the Musée national Picasso-Paris, Virginie Perdrisot-Cassan, Chief Curator and Head of Sculpture and Ceramics at the Musée national Picasso-Paris, and Aisha AlAhmadi, Associate Curator at Louvre Abu Dhabi, Picasso, the Figure is designed to offer a retrospective in chronological order, taking you through his journey as an artist and his engagement with the human figure.
