Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Nation, founded Emirati Women’s Day in 2015 to honour the invaluable contributions Emirati women have made to the nation’s progress. This year, rather than marking the occasion for a single day, the celebrations extend across an entire month, running from 28 August to 28 September. To commemorate the milestone, MOJEH sits down with established Emirati women who continue to make an impact on society in more ways than one.
For the third instalment of the Emirati Women’s Month series, MOJEH speaks to jewellery designer Noora Shawqi about creativity, preserving craftsmanship and feeling supported as an entrepreneur. Noora’s eponymous jewellery brand captures her love for travel. After embarking on extensive travels in pursuit of precious pieces from regional and international jewellers, Noora was inspired to create her own brand and did so in 2018 after receiving certifications from the Gemological Institution of America and the International Gemological Institute. Though inspired by the landscapes of Egypt, Tokyo, Morocco and The Maldives, it was the UAE that empowered her to pursue her dreams. Here, Noora discusses identity, heritage and building success through community.
The theme of Emirati Women’s Day 2026 is “We Emerge Stronger and Better.” What has the nation’s resilience taught you and what do you think it has shown the world?
The UAE has shown me that resilience is not just about overcoming challenges, but about continuing to move forward with purpose, optimism and a willingness to evolve. It has shown the world that ambition and heritage can exist side by side, and that staying true to your identity is one of the greatest strengths you can have. That mindset has influenced the way I approach both design and business, always looking ahead while remaining deeply connected to where I come from.
How has the UAE empowered you?
The UAE has given women the confidence to lead, create and build businesses with real purpose. I have always felt encouraged to pursue my ideas and trust my own perspective, knowing that creativity and entrepreneurship are genuinely valued here. As a designer, it is uplifting to build a brand in a country that celebrates innovation while taking such pride in its culture and craftsmanship.
Emirati Women’s Day has been extended to a month-long celebration. How do you intend on celebrating the women in your life?
For me, celebrating the women in my life is about making time for them and appreciating the different ways they have shaped and supported me. Emirati Women’s Day is a beautiful reminder to recognise not only individual achievements, but also the encouragement, generosity and sense of community that women create for one another. I hope to celebrate that throughout the month by being present, supportive and intentional in showing my appreciation.
Which Emirati women inspire you and how do you hope to inspire others?
I have always been inspired by Emirati women who lead with purpose, whether in business or their communities. They have shown that success is built through consistency, integrity and a clear sense of who you are. I hope to inspire others by creating something meaningful, staying true to my creative vision and showing that authenticity is one of the most valuable qualities to have.
Which cherished Emirati tradition do you hope to pass on to the next generation?
Our appreciation for hospitality, generosity and meaningful human connection. These values have always been at the heart of Emirati culture and I believe they are just as important today as they have ever been. I also hope we continue to celebrate our craftsmanship and heritage, finding new ways to preserve them while allowing them to evolve with each generation. Shop Noora Shawqi here
