6 Sleep Rituals For Nervous System Regulation

This World Sleep Day, MOJEH shares six sleep rituals to help you rest better

Sleep has moved beyond a basic necessity to become the ultimate luxury and a non-negotiable pillar for cognitive performance and staying healthy. As we look toward the 2026 wellness landscape, the focus has shifted from the duration of rest to the assessable quality of it. “Quality sleep plays a crucial role in decision-making and emotional balance,” says Dr. Taniyaa Bakshhi, Homeopathic Physician. “When sleep is compromised, the brain struggles to regulate itself properly, which can affect focus, mood and the choices we make in daily life.”

To achieve a restorative slumber, one must then treat the evening as a series of steps to wind down, and as a deliberate, 90-minute transition that signals the nervous system to shift from high-alert sympathetic dominance to the calm of the parasympathetic state. MOJEH shares the easiest ways to improve your rest with these sleep rituals.

The Circadian Lighting Transition

As the sun sets, your internal environment should follow suit. At least two hours before bed, eliminate all overhead cool lighting in favour of warm-toned lamps and amber-hued candles as part of your sleep ritual. This mimics the natural progression of twilight, triggering the pineal gland to initiate melatonin production.

“One of the most powerful yet underestimated rituals is respecting the natural light-dark cycle that governs our circadian biology. As evening approaches, reducing artificial blue light and using blue-light-blocking glasses helps signal to the nervous system that it is time to slow down and prepare for deep rest,” explains Dr. Chérine Bazzane who is part of the premium wellness brand Bon Charge’s Scientific Advisory Board to MOJEH. Ideally by 9:00 PM, your home should feel like a sanctuary of soft shadows, protecting your nervous system from the cortisol spiking blue light of the digital world.

The 4-7-8 Breathwork Meditation

Often referred to as the natural tranquiliser for the nervous system, this rhythmic breathing technique is a favourite of wellness enthusiasts. Inhale through the nose for 4 seconds, hold for 7 and exhale forcefully through the mouth for 8. This specific ratio forces the heart rate to slow and physically interrupts the looping thoughts that often characterise a stressful lifestyle. Repeat four times as you lie in total darkness to anchor your consciousness in the body. It is the perfect sleep ritual to get the body to relax.

The Sensory Brain-Dump

Overstimulation is the enemy of REM sleep. To prevent your brain from processing the day’s tasks at 3:00 AM, engage in a 10-minute journaling session. Use a physical notebook, avoiding all screens, to list tomorrow’s priorities and any lingering anxieties. By externalising these thoughts onto paper, you provide your subconscious with a permission slip to rest, effectively lowering your cognitive load before the lights go out.

The Early Nutritional Cut-Off

To give your body the best chance at deep recovery, aim to finish your last meal at least three hours before bed. Digestion is an active, heat-generating process that can interfere with the core temperature drop needed for sleep. “A major reason for disrupted rest is our modern lifestyle, specifically eating at odd hours. Eating after 8:30 PM does not give the body enough time for proper digestion before bed,” explains Dr Bakshhi. “Consistency is key; before reaching for supplements, you must first fix your schedule regarding when you eat and when you sleep.”

By eating early, you shift your body’s energy away from breaking down food and toward cellular repair. Focus on light, magnesium-rich foods and avoid late-night sugar spikes to ensure your nervous system stays calm and uninterrupted throughout the night.

Getting The Right Temperature

The body’s core temperature must drop by approximately two degrees to initiate deep sleep. While a hot soak is an excellent precursor, the ritual ends with the cool down. Emerging from warmth into a slightly chilled bedroom (ideally 18°C) creates a thermal drop that acts as a biological off switch, plunging the nervous system into a state of immediate readiness for slumber.

The Vagus Nerve Sound Bath

Think of the vagus nerve as the body’s internal reset button – a cranial nerve that acts as a direct communication line between the brain and the vital organs, specifically responsible for switching the body from a fight-or-flight state into a deep, restorative rest-and-digest mode. Sound healing has hence become an essential companion in the lives of wellness enthusiasts today. Utilise brown noise or binaural beats, frequencies specifically engineered to mirror the brain’s delta waves. These low-frequency sounds vibrate through the inner ear to stimulate the vagus nerve, gently massaging the nervous system into a state of safety and surrender.
